JioHotstar's ads tap 83% shopping-ready viewers

JioHotstar has added a store shelf to the ad break. The streamer’s new StreamToCart Ads, powered by Instamart, let viewers browse products and add items to cart without pausing the show or leaving the player.

It is a small interface change with a large behavioural implication: attention and buying intent no longer have to live on separate screens.

From ad break to aisle

During video breaks, a native overlay lets viewers scroll products and add items to cart while the stream continues. The format can be used across FMCG, packaged foods, beauty and consumer electronics.

Bhaskar Ramesh, head- Entertainment Sales, Digital at JioStar, described the launch as “transforming the ad break into an opportunity for viewers to discover and purchase products seamlessly.”

Attention-to-cart distance

The real product here is shorter distance. Every tap, app switch and login is a leak in the purchase journey. StreamToCart Ads remove several of those leaks by keeping discovery, selection and cart-building inside the player.

That matters because quick commerce has already trained Indian shoppers to expect fast, low-friction access to everyday categories. A shoppable ad extends that expectation from the delivery layer to the awareness layer.

The audience was already shopping

JioHotstar’s internal data suggests commerce is not being forced onto the streamer’s audience:

  • 83% of viewers identify as active shopping enthusiasts.
  • 60% of platform-driven conversions come from new and dormant shoppers.
  • A Datum Intelligence study cited by JioHotstar found half of online shoppers order at least five times a month through quick commerce, including planned restocks and spontaneous buys.

What brands should watch

For marketers, the practical test is whether a shoppable ad can create lower-funnel action without feeling intrusive. The format’s core promise is non-disruptive browsing; if that holds, the ad break becomes a mini storefront.

Not every brand belongs inside a cart. But for products bought on impulse or restocked routinely, StreamToCart removes the gap between “I want that” and “I’ve added it.” The next advantage is measurement: add-to-cart events can sit alongside reach and frequency as a live conversion signal, not a lagging indicator.
