Karwa Chauth D2C sales climb 64% beyond the North

Karwa Chauth is quietly turning into a pan-India shopping moment. GoKwik’s network data for the six days leading up to the ritual shows direct-to-consumer sales rose 64% year-on-year, with orders climbing 60% to 3.19 million from 2 million in the same period last year.

Demand is spreading, but the heartland got stronger

Festival-labelled products are the most telling signal. Demand for products explicitly marketed for Karwa Chauth grew 3.4 times in central India, 2.7 times in western India and 2.3 times in eastern and northeastern India. Southern India recorded about 3% growth, while northern India grew 3.9 times. The North’s share of festival-labelled orders also rose from 46% to 62%, suggesting expansion did not dilute the core market.

What the basket reveals

The occasion bundles three buying motives: ritual preparation, dressing up and gifting. Northern demand for pooja accessories hit 3.2 times the regular-week baseline; mangalsutra and bridal jewellery demand reached 2.35 times; jewellery sets came in at 2.27 times and maang tikka more than doubled. In beauty and fashion, face makeup demand rose 76% and ethnic wear climbed 73%, with red, maroon and magenta gaining ground alongside pastels.

Occasion-led intent beats discount-led intent

The payment data makes the psychology visible. Prepaid orders accounted for 60% of festival-labelled purchases, compared with 54% across the wider network. Coupon usage fell to 47.4% from 51.9%. Shoppers with a fixed ritual date show stronger commitment: they pay upfront and lean less on promotions.

“The occasion brings together ritual preparation, dressing and gifting, creating demand across several categories,” said Chirag Taneja, co-founder and CEO of GoKwik.

What marketers should do

Yet only 37 merchants explicitly marketed products for Karwa Chauth on a network that serves more than 15,000 D2C brands. That is open space.

  • Build dedicated festival-labelled collections instead of generic festive edits.
  • Target central, western and eastern regions with region-specific assortments.
  • Plan inventory and delivery around a fixed date; ritual buyers prepay and expect certainty.
  • Use occasion-led creative, not just discount-led creative, to preserve intent.

The wider lesson? A festival is not a geography. When a ritual bundles identity, gifting and preparation, demand can travel faster than the tradition itself.
