ICICI Life swaps fear for ease in new brand platform

Life insurance has long been sold as a hedge against disaster—the illness, the accident, the family left behind. ICICI Life Insurance and Ogilvy India are betting that this default fear has become the category’s biggest drag. On 16 October 2026, the brand announced a new platform, ‘Har Kal Aasaan’, built around the opposite feeling: ease.

A category built on worst-case thinking

Life insurance has traditionally approached tomorrow ‘through the lens of risk and uncertainty’, as Ganapathy Balagopalan, deputy chief strategy officer at Ogilvy India, put it. That framing makes logical sense: the product exists to protect against loss. But fear is a double-edged motivator. It captures attention, yet it can also trigger avoidance—when the future feels too heavy, people postpone the decision rather than face it.

From fear to ease

The platform positions future planning as intuitive rather than burdensome. The launch film swaps doomsday scenarios for reunions, birthday celebrations and quiet family moments—the outcomes people actually want to protect.

Srinivas Balasubramanian, ICICI Life’s chief of marketing and digital business, said the platform expresses a belief that preparing for the future should give people ‘a sense of calmness and of being in control.’ In other words, the brand is not selling a new product; it is changing the emotional temperature around the old one.

Why ease can outsell fear

This is more than a tonal refresh. It is a reframe of the category’s dominant emotion. Fear works for activation, but it can become a background hum that customers learn to ignore. Ease, by contrast, lowers the cognitive load of a decision: if planning for tomorrow feels light, the action itself feels more possible.

  • The same need, a different feeling: protection is still the product; calm replaces dread as the wrapper.
  • Everyday proof points: the film uses ordinary warm moments, not catastrophes, to make the future tangible.
  • A brand platform, not a one-off ad: the shift is designed to hold across campaigns, not just a single execution.

What marketers should borrow

The wider lesson is to audit the emotional convention in your category. If the default is fear, guilt or shame, someone will eventually win by offering relief. Balagopalan said the goal was to ‘move the conversation from fear to ease’ and show that preparing for tomorrow does not have to mean putting today on hold.

The test will be whether consumers remember the insurer for calm rather than for coverage—and how quickly competitors follow.
