India’s GCCs Are Becoming Global Brand Headquarters

India's 1,850 GCCs now shape brand strategy, not just campaigns. With 57% of Indian marketers funding AI, the global brand office is moving east.

India’s GCCs move from back office to global brand office

For years the brief for India was simple: execute. Global companies sent IT support, payroll, data processing and claims management to Indian teams because the work was reliable and affordable. Now a different kind of brief is landing in Mumbai and Bangalore — one that asks for judgement, positioning and brand decisions, not just delivery.

From execution to ownership

India began operating as the world’s back office in the early 1990s, built on a large English-speaking workforce, economic liberalisation and an early technology base. Those roots are still there, but the remit has changed. Global Capability Centres have moved up the value chain into work such as:

  • customer intelligence, analytics and personalisation
  • digital experience, demand generation and go-to-market decisions
  • brand strategy and positioning, rather than only campaign localisation

Spherical Insights puts the scale at more than 1,850 GCCs, over 2 million professionals and USD 46 billion in output, with AI and analytics driving 30% of global marketing intelligence operations.

Why this matters for brand builders

Marketing now blends creativity, technology and commercial strategy. India has built deep strength across all three, which makes it a natural home for strategic marketing work. A Boston Consulting Group report found that 57% of Indian respondents say AI is funded by the marketing function, compared with 47% globally — making India one of the most marketing-led AI investment markets in the world.

This is less about cost arbitrage and more about capability arbitrage. The economic advantage still exists, but that alone rarely justifies moving strategic decisions. What matters is the combination of talent, data, technology, creativity and scale. Indian marketing leaders are using local data-science and analytics talent to build and test AI-powered marketing tools before those tools roll out globally.

What marketers should do with this

For brand managers and founders, the shift is a signal: teams that prove they understand the customer get trusted with strategy, not just tasks. Indian GCCs are moving through a clear progression — from executing campaigns, to measuring and personalising at scale, to conceiving and owning brand strategy. That final stage is where the real leverage sits.

There is a useful way to read this progression as a trust ladder. A team first earns confidence by executing campaigns flawlessly. It then earns credibility by measuring and personalising better. Finally it earns ownership by making calls that connect marketing to business growth. India’s GCC journey follows that exact path.

Marketers in these centres are now identifying priority audiences, shaping positioning, interpreting customer signals and guiding investment. CMOs of global product lines and regional heads of brand strategy are increasingly based in India rather than New York or London.

India’s complexity is the training ground. Reaching customers across many regions, languages, income levels and levels of digital adoption demands serious segmentation, localisation and disciplined channel investment. That experience transfers directly to global roles where brands must adapt without losing consistency. Expect more of the strategic work behind global brands to be led from India.
