Zee5’s Free 5 turns free streamers into an ad asset

Zee5 is repositioning Free 5 as a returnable free destination, using curated ad-supported content to build reach and advertising revenue.

Free viewers can be Zee5's next ad asset

Free streaming has long been a waiting room, not a destination. Viewers sample a little, get nudged toward a subscription and leave. Zee5 is trying to change that with a revamped Free 5, an ad-supported tier built for return visits.

The service got a sharper identity in September, pulling films, original series, Korean and Chinese dramas, anime, news, microdramas and creator-led content into one clearly branded space. Alisha Coelho, AVOD business head at Zee5, says the goal is to “challenge the perception that free content is necessarily cheap or low-quality.”

From gateway to destination

Free 5 began last year as a rethink of Zee5’s non-episodic catalogue. The revamp goes further: rather than leaving free titles buried inside the larger app, it gives them a recognisable home. The behavioural bet is simple—curated free content earns repeat attention, not just accidental sampling.

Sampling still plays a part. Viewers can watch 12 minutes of a film or the first episode of a web series before deciding whether to subscribe. But conversion to paid plans is not the only objective. Coelho says: “We want Free 5 to become a destination in its own right, where users return for the content we curate.”

The catalogue is built partly for reach. Zee5 hosts more than 100 microdramas from partner Bullet and is scaling Indian originals, Chinese dramas and news. It is also courting urban men aged 18–35, a group Coelho believes is under-represented in Zee5’s viewing beyond films and sports. Events such as FIFA have brought male audiences in; films, web series and other formats are meant to keep them.

Advertising as a first-class business

Zee5 is not treating AVOD as a side door to subscriptions. Coelho says the advertising-led video business “must stand shoulder to shoulder with the premium business.”

For brand managers, Free 5 is being positioned as a curated environment rather than extra inventory. Advertisers can combine placements with Zee5’s social assets and television network. The platform is also leaning into integrations that make brands part of the story: Saffola on a World Heart Day special, Imperial Blue on a stand-up series about masculinity, Catch Masala inside a Zee5 original.

The guardrail is viewer experience. Zee5 tracks ad frequency, engagement and drop-off so advertising does not become the reason people stop watching. The psychology is straightforward: free content holds attention only when the ad load feels fair.

  • Build a distinct free identity, not a blurred on-ramp to premium.
  • Use free viewing as low-risk sampling: 12 minutes of a film or a full first episode.
  • Chase a specific underserved audience: urban men 18–35.
  • Protect repeat viewing by monitoring frequency, engagement and drop-off.

CTV and FAST widen the door

Connected TV is becoming a big part of Free 5’s plan. Coelho says CTV consumption is now almost at par with the app and has grown steadily. That matters because CTV draws co-viewing and generally commands higher ad yields. Pause ads, banners, overlays and customised brand partnerships give marketers formats beyond pre-rolls.

Alongside Free 5, Zee5 is building a separate FAST offering—linear, genre-led channels rather than on-demand browsing. Ormax Media data puts India’s FAST audience at 35.2 million in 2026. FAST accounts for about 14% of the time Indian CTV viewers spend on connected TVs, or roughly 2.5 hours a week. Zee5’s five FAST channels cover romance, comedy, horror, classic cinema and South Indian films dubbed in Hindi, and are distributed through Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, Airtel and Vi Television Movies. The plan is to bring these channels into the Zee5 app, possibly before the end of 2026.

The broader strategy is many doors into one ecosystem: catch-up TV, premium subscriptions, Free 5 and FAST. Each door serves a different need, but the commercial opportunity depends on keeping people engaged once they walk in.
