JK Cement’s ₹394 cr paint bet is a trust transfer play
JK Cement followed its putty customer to the paint counter and used the MaxX umbrella to hit ₹394 cr in paint revenue. The premium is in intent, not price.
JK Cement has spent the past few years turning a wall putty brand into a full paint-system play. The latest numbers show the promise and the gap: JK Maxx Paints reported FY26 revenue of ₹394.09 crore with a net loss of ₹53.32 crore, while management guides ₹500–550 crore for FY27. The premium story is still a mix-and-discipline story, not a proven price premium.
Follow the customer to the paint counter
The company’s own explanation is that putty already sat on the paint counter, so it was losing customers by surviving on one product. That makes paints a defensive extension of an existing franchise, not a standalone category bet. The board approved a paints subsidiary in 2022, JK Cement acquired 60% of Acro Paints for ₹153 crore in January 2023, and the Acro business was later merged into JK Maxx Paints.
The MaxX umbrella did the heavy lifting. The 2019 relaunch brought sub-brands under one family; a 2020 digital series built the system; the 2026 work, “Maxx Karo, Relax Karo” with Akshay Kumar, sells a complete wall solution. In October 2026 the company added JK Naturals, a sustainability-led paint brand, with JK Naturals Aura claiming over 40% eco-friendly content and a phased North India launch.
One umbrella, three promises
The brand promise has shifted. In 2019 it was aesthetics. In 2020 it was breadth. In 2026 it is risk reduction: the film shows experts recommending JK Maxx at putty, primer and paint stage. Read together, the company is borrowing trust from an established putty brand to lower the perceived risk of a newer paint brand.
- Umbrella branding lowered the cost of entering a new category.
- Trust transfer moves credibility from putty to paint.
- Premium intent is defined by mix and pricing discipline, not by a realised price premium.
Volume is up, premium is not proven
The white business grew production 12.71% to 19.33 lakh tons and sales volume 11.08% to 18.04 lakh tons in FY26, but putty realisation stayed under pressure. Management attributed part of a Q1 FY27 white volume gain to lower UAE imports, a temporary disruption. Paints reached EBITDA breakeven in Q1 FY27 on about ₹125 crore of revenue, with 5–7% EBITDA margins targeted for FY28.
For brand managers, the lesson is to separate distribution muscle from brand equity. JK Cement has roughly 91,000 dealers and retailers, and it is using that channel to push a new category. The untested part is whether Acro and MaxX can become credible paint brands on their own.
What to steal
Map the next purchase moment your best seller already touches. If your hero product sits beside an adjacent category, position the extension as risk reduction and a system, then measure whether borrowed trust turns into standalone equity.
