PhonePe Turns 70 Crore Users Into a Human Brand Story

PhonePe's 10-year film tries to name all 70 crore users, turning a huge number into a 980-day thought experiment and a branding lesson.

PhonePe makes 70 crore users feel human

PhonePe has marked ten years not by celebrating itself, but by attempting a near-impossible act of customer recognition: naming all 70 crore registered users.

The insight is as old as branding itself but easy to forget: people do not feel big numbers. They feel the effort, time or difficulty those numbers imply.

The anniversary film, created with Ogilvy, turns a giant user base into a physical challenge. It features Shahu Supreme, who holds the Indian record for speaking at 494 words per minute. His task is to call out real PhonePe users by name at full speed. Even at that record pace, the film notes, the effort would take 980 consecutive days.

The milestone becomes a customer tribute

This is a deliberate departure from the usual scale-flex campaign. Rather than patting itself on the back, PhonePe frames a decade of growth as millions of small human moments. It is the first contactless payment, the micro-enterprise finding customers, the daily transaction that quietly becomes part of a larger digital habit.

Amit Doshi, group chief marketing officer at PhonePe, described the film as an “expression of gratitude toward our customers.” Akshay Seth, senior executive creative director at Ogilvy Mumbai, put the creative logic simply: “numbers tell us only one side of the story.”

Why the creative device works

  • It makes scale felt. Seventy crore is an abstraction; 980 days of continuous naming is a picture the mind can hold.
  • It changes the protagonist. The customer becomes the hero, while the brand steps back into a supporting role.
  • It uses proof, not proclamation. Watching a record-holder fall short is more believable than a line about “70 crore happy users.”
  • It converts gratitude into identity. The message shifts from “we grew” to “you built this with us.”

Humanising data is a positioning move

From a behavioural perspective, very large numbers are easy to say and hard to feel. A crore is a statistic; an impossible 980-day speaking task is an experience. When a brand translates a metric into time, labour or one person’s feat, the number borrows the emotional weight of human effort. That is the real lesson beneath the stunt.

For brand teams, the exercise is simple. Take your biggest number and ask what a single person would have to do to honour it. If you have a million customers, how long would it take to thank each one? If you processed a billion orders, how long would one person need to count them? The answer can become the campaign.

The risk with gratitude-led work is that it drifts into vague sentiment. PhonePe mostly avoids this by anchoring the emotion to a concrete, almost absurd thought experiment and to the ordinary progress of its users.
