Mayavé Bets Luxury Can Be Built on Possibility, Not Scarcity

HK Group and OPEN Strategy & Design launch Mayavé Jewellery, reframing lab-grown diamonds from mined substitutes to a category of creative freedom and choice.

Mayavé reframes diamonds from scarcity to possibility

HK Group, a global leader in lab-grown diamond manufacturing, has launched Mayavé Jewellery in India, developed in partnership with Mumbai-based consultancy OPEN Strategy & Design. The brand’s stated ambition is bigger than another diamond label: it wants to stop treating lab-grown stones as substitutes and make them a category in their own right.

The scarcity script is the real competitor

Traditional diamond marketing has run on a simple belief: rarity equals value. That script shows up as limited choice, conventional cuts and the idea that desirability comes from what is hard to get. Mayavé flips the frame. Its platform moves the category story from scarcity to possibility.

For marketers, this is a classic reframe. Rather than fighting the incumbent on its own terms, Mayavé changes the question. The product is not “a more affordable version of a mined diamond”; it becomes a diamond chosen freely, built around how people actually wear jewellery today.

What the brand actually changed

OPEN built Mayavé’s strategic and creative foundation, including brand strategy, naming, visual identity and packaging, while also providing direction across digital and physical retail. That matters because a category-defining claim only works if every touchpoint repeats it.

Dravya Dholakia, CEO of Mayavé Jewellery, said the intention was to create jewellery that feels relevant to modern consumers while still carrying craftsmanship, emotion and longevity. Asparsh Sinha, Managing Partner at OPEN Strategy & Design, described the task as freeing “the conversation around diamonds from the mythology of rarity” and giving consumers permission to own exactly what they desire.

Why it matters for brand builders

Lab-grown diamonds are usually marketed as an ethical or budget-friendly alternative. That framing keeps the mined diamond as the reference point and quietly turns lab-grown into a compromise. Mayavé refuses that comparison and claims a different source of value: creative freedom, exceptional quality and choice, backed by HK Group’s scale and advanced cutting expertise.

  • Swap “substitute for X” for “a new way to Y” so you stop competing on price.
  • Find the hidden assumption in your category and invert it, as Mayavé does with scarcity.
  • Make the positioning visible across naming, packaging, retail and digital, not just in a tagline.

The lesson is simple: when you inherit a category’s old psychology, you inherit its limits. Mayavé is betting that a new psychology, possibility, can do what scarcity did for diamonds in the last century.
