Lenovo’s Broadway bet for the Idea Tab Pro Gen 2
Lenovo's Broadway-inspired Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 film casts Abhay Varma as an everyday juggler. We judge whether the theatre lands or steals recall.
Our score: 7/10 · Lenovo, “Everyday moments into opportunities”
Verdict: The Broadway device makes the tablet distinctive, but it must keep the product as the memory target.
What works
- The musical format gives Lenovo a distinctive style code in a specs-heavy category.
- Placing the tablet throughout Varma's day frames it as an everyday enabler.
- Casting Abhay Varma adds contemporary, relatable pull.
What misses
- The theatre could overpower the product and blur the functional message.
- No visible bridge between Broadway and the tablet's AI, stylus or battery features.
The lesson: Distinctiveness creates recall only if the product stays central to the story, not just present in it.
The ad
Lenovo has launched a campaign for the Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 featuring Abhay Varma in a Broadway-inspired film. Created by Kinnect, part of Omnicom Advertising India, the film sits under Lenovo’s ‘Damn the Odds’ platform. The source does not name a director. It follows Varma through a fast-paced day, using theatrical transitions, movement and music to move between the roles and tasks he navigates, with the tablet present throughout. The campaign is live across retail touchpoints and is set to roll out on television.
Kinnect has handled strategy, creative development, talent management, production, offline activation and the integrated rollout. This is the agency’s first integrated mainline campaign for Lenovo. The Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 itself carries hybrid AI capabilities, Smart Reader, keyboard and stylus support, and long battery life.
What works
The core behavioural move is distinctiveness. Tablet advertising often collapses into a spec sheet with a glowing screen. The Broadway format gives Lenovo a style cue — music, motion, staging — that can cut through a category where brands blur. That is salience at work: memory favours the brand that owns a distinctive asset.
Narrative transportation is the second lever. Because the film places Varma inside a day of competing roles, the tablet inherits relevance from study, work and personal pursuit. It is framed as an everyday enabler, not a gadget. That is a stronger position than listing features.
Casting Abhay Varma sharpens that framing. His contemporary, relatable screen presence gives the theatrical concept a human anchor, and matches Kinnect’s intent to speak to a new generation of consumers rather than a trade audience.
What misses
The big risk is that the theatre swallows the product. A Broadway musical is loud, kinetic and memorable on its own. If viewers recall the performance but not the Idea Tab Pro Gen 2, the campaign will have produced attention without brand salience. Distinctiveness only pays when the style cue stays attached to the product.
The source lists hybrid AI, Smart Reader, keyboard and stylus support and long battery life, but does not show them playing a visible role in the described narrative. Without that bridge, the musical device risks reading as an entertaining wrapper rather than a reason to choose the tablet.
The verdict
This is a 7 out of 10. The Broadway device gives Lenovo a distinct creative language and a more contemporary brand expression. It works as attention theatre, but the product argument needs to stay in the spotlight for the distinctiveness to convert into recall and consideration.
The lesson
Choose a high-energy creative device only if the product is the trigger for the drama. Distinctiveness creates recall when the product is central to the story, not just present in it.
