Britannia Cakes turns six Bengal rituals into festive branding
Britannia Cakes puts six Bengal festive rituals on limited-edition packs, then extends them into a film, metro wrap, AR avatars and memory collection.
Festive marketing often collapses into generic cheer. Britannia Cakes has chosen a more specific route in West Bengal: it has put six local rituals on its packs and built an entire campaign around the memories those rituals carry.
What the campaign does
Britannia Cakes has launched “Unwrap the Joy of Celebrations”, a festive push built around six rituals and traditions linked to celebrations in West Bengal. The special-edition packs feature:
- Sindoor Khela
- Dhaak
- Pushpanjali
- Shankho
- Kola Bou
- Dhunuchi
Those pack designs have also been adapted into a brand film. In Kolkata, the idea moves onto the Green Line of the metro with a Britannia Cakes Metro Wrap running from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V.
A six-day newspaper activation adds an augmented reality layer. Each day highlights one ritual, and readers can scan a QR code to create a festive avatar, including a dhaaki or dhunuchi dancer.
Why rituals beat generic festivity
A generic “festive season” message is easy to ignore because it belongs to everyone and no one. A specific ritual is different: it is already loaded with family, neighbourhood and community memory. When the pack carries Sindoor Khela or Dhunuchi, the product stops being just a cake and becomes a small token of that ritual.
That is a textbook localisation move. The brand is not inventing a new tradition; it is borrowing equity from rituals consumers already rehearse every year.
“West Bengal has always held a special place in Britannia Cakes’ journey, and our connection with consumers here has been built over many years and many shared moments.”
— Shekhar Agarwal, general manager, Britannia
What marketers can borrow
The campaign follows a simple three-step logic: make the pack recognisable through local ritual, make the experience participatory through AR, and make the idea durable by collecting consumer memories.
- Name the specific rituals a region already cherishes instead of using one generic festive visual.
- Carry the ritual beyond the pack: a film, a transit wrap and an interactive layer.
- Use participation to collect consumer stories, not just impressions.
Britannia Cakes says it will also interact with people across Kolkata to collect memories and stories associated with the special-edition packs, from family traditions to neighbourhood gatherings and rituals passed down generations. That turns the campaign into a listening exercise, and potentially into next year’s proof.
