Why Chasing AI Search Citations Is a Losing Strategy

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell 86% in a month. The lesson for marketers: stop chasing unstable AI search and lead with audience.

Why AI Search Chasing Fails Marketers

For much of this year, the advice seemed inescapable: if you wanted your brand to show up in ChatGPT, you needed a Reddit strategy. Reddit had become a disproportionate source of AI citations, and marketers reshaped content plans to chase that visibility. Then the map moved.

The Reddit bet reversed quickly

Between mid-July and mid-August, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT search citations fell 86%, according to Promptwatch. That is not a gradual dip; it is a cliff. Teams that had rebuilt channel strategies around Reddit purely for AI visibility were left exposed—not because Reddit stopped mattering to customers, but because an AI product changed how it browses the web.

Fast Company’s diagnosis is blunt: marketers are “contorting entire channel strategies” around software that is still figuring out its own behavior.

Why AI-first optimization is a trap

AI-powered search deserves attention, but it is still a modest slice of overall search volume. The bigger problem is fragmentation. Optimizing for ChatGPT can pull against what Google Gemini rewards. A Perplexity play may conflict with Google AI Overview. Policies are opaque, updates arrive without warning, and content created to satisfy one assistant can become useless overnight.

There is also a branding cost. Content manufactured to get cited tends to sound like everything else: safe, explanatory, built for retrieval rather than resonance. It may be surfaced by a model, but it rarely creates the distinctiveness that drives memory, trust and preference.

  • Treat AI citation visibility as a lagging indicator, not the primary goal.
  • Build for real customer questions, not for one assistant’s current preferences.
  • Keep a distinctive brand voice even when it makes content less “LLM-friendly.”
  • Monitor multiple AI assistants, but don’t let any single one dictate channel mix.

The psychology behind the herd

The rush to Reddit was partly a social-proof effect. Visible citations felt like evidence of reach, so teams copied the tactic without asking whether Reddit fit their brand or buyer. When a proxy metric becomes the whole strategy, it is easy to mistake being cited for being chosen.

Audience-first is the closest thing to algorithm-proof

The way out is familiar because it has survived every platform shift from the web to mobile: let the audience lead. Ask what customers genuinely need, then make something worth their time. When humans value the work, AI models tend to surface it as a by-product of real attention. When you chase the citation, you often get neither the citation nor the customer.

Run a simple test before your next content sprint: would you still publish this if no AI assistant ever cited it? If the answer is no, it is probably not strong enough for humans either.
