A 642% Citation Jump Is Rewriting Digital PR
HubSpot's AEO data shows a 642% jump in comparison-article citations and 58% more mentions. AI visibility is becoming earned media's real scoreboard.
The fight for organic visibility used to end at page one of a search engine. Now it ends inside an AI-generated answer. HubSpot’s new answer engine optimisation data makes that shift hard to ignore: its own marketing team recorded a 642% increase in citations for comparison articles, along with a 58% increase in overall mentions.
For digital PR, that is not just a vanity metric. When a buyer asks an answer engine which tools or brands to consider, the brand that appears in the response has earned influence that a press release never quite captured.
The metric gap in earned media
Most PR teams still report placement volume, domain authority and estimated reach. Those numbers measure output. They do not reliably measure whether a brand shows up where buyers now ask questions.
HubSpot’s AEO tool tracks AI mentions, analyses citations, monitors prompts and benchmarks competitors. Its Citation Analysis surfaces which specific publications and content types are being cited in answer engines. The uncomfortable insight: a top-tier outlet placement does not automatically become an AI citation. Some publications are cited consistently; others barely appear.
Comparison content becomes a visibility engine
The 642% jump in comparison-article citations is the most actionable signal here. It suggests answer engines lean on content that directly compares options when buyers are deciding what to choose.
- Buyers research categories conversationally, so AI answers reward content that matches that frame.
- Comparison articles are earning disproportionate citations in AI results.
- Media lists built on reach alone can miss the outlets answer engines actually trust.
This reframes what PR success means. Earned media that appears in AI results now carries more influence than traditional coverage alone. The teams pulling ahead treat AI visibility as a measurable outcome, not a downstream accident.
From placement to proof
HubSpot’s Brand Visibility Dashboard tracks visibility score, citations and share of voice over time. That translates PR work into a clearer business case: run the campaign, watch the AI visibility score move, and show stakeholders which placements drove it.
The practical move is not to abandon relationship-building. The publications that influence AI answers are largely the same outlets teams already court. What changes is prioritisation — target the outlets and content types with demonstrated citation influence, then report that movement as the new earned media result.
