At 50, the NYC Marathon Is a Brand Magnet

The 50th NYC Marathon is drawing energy drinks, beauty, mattresses and athleisure into weekend-long community activations, not just race-day logos.

Why the NYC Marathon’s 50th Is a Brand Magnet

The New York City Marathon is turning 50, and the milestone is pulling in a far wider set of brands than the usual running-shoe crowd. This year’s race is expected to set a participation record, and marketers from beauty to mattresses are building weekend-long experiences around it.

A 50th anniversary becomes a brand platform

Footwear labels such as Nike, New Balance and Hoka are naturally hosting pop-ups. What is different is the breadth. Maybelline has become the marathon’s first official beauty sponsor, kicking things off with a pre-race shakeout run alongside running sunglasses brand Rendezvous Sports, with giveaways and snacks. Energy drink Celsius, mattress maker Saatva and athleisure brand Vuori are all hosting activations too.

Weekend hubs, not just race-day logos

Celsius is opening Club Celsius in Brooklyn, along the marathon route, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2. The space is designed to move with the weekend: pre-race prep, race-day cheering and post-race celebrations. Visitors can customise race gear and sample drinks, while a Friday sunset group run includes DJ duo Sidequest, “Love Island” alum Corbin Mims and other fitness creators.

“The brand was founded in fitness, and it remains an integral part of our DNA,” said Kyle Watson, Celsius’s chief brand officer.

Watson says running has grown beyond a fitness-only activity into a social gathering, so the activation is meant to be a social destination rather than a static sponsorship.

Saatva is using its first marathon pop-up to put sleep and recovery into the performance conversation. The company hosted a wellness event at its Flatiron store with five-time NYC Marathon winner Tatyana McFadden and Frank Reneau, founder of A Mile. A Minute. Founder and CEO Ron Rudzin framed it as part of a larger bet: the marathon’s global brand reflects how running has become a year-round culture around wellness, community and performance. Saatva is also an official mattress and restorative sleep partner for USA Track & Field and Team USA at the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

Vuori is also making its first marathon-week push, with weekend events at its Flatiron store and a race-day Williamsburg pop-up featuring a branded newsstand and cheer signs. Global president Ashley Kechter said the energy and connection around the race made it a natural fit for a brand built on movement and run clubs.

Why this matters for marketers

Major sporting moments are increasingly dominating attention, and the NYC Marathon now sits at the overlap of sport, wellness and local community. For brands, the opportunity is not the 26.2 miles itself; it is the social layer around it.

The common playbook is clear:

  • Design a hub that serves before, during and after the event
  • Bring in creators, run clubs and local communities rather than just staff
  • Cover recovery and wellness, not only performance
  • Anchor the activation in the brand’s core identity

The lesson from Celsius, Saatva and Vuori is that a marathon sponsorship works when it behaves like a community event. A logo on a barrier gets attention for seconds; a place where runners stretch, recover, cheer and socialise earns a place in the culture.
