AI searchers are 36% more likely to buy. What ChatGPT ads change
OpenAI's ChatGPT ads beta is live, with context-hint matching, Free/Go-only reach and early CPA signals. Here's how to test without gutting Google.
ChatGPT ads have moved out of the rumour phase. OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager is now live in beta, which means brands can buy sponsored placements inside ChatGPT for the first real wave of testing. The immediate question—should you move budget from Google Search ads?—has a short answer: not until you have your own data.
Two different buying mindsets
Google and ChatGPT look similar because both put a paid message near an answer, but the psychology is different. Google catches people who have already converted a need into a specific query. ChatGPT meets people who are still forming the question. That is why OpenAI’s ad unit does not use exact-match keywords; it uses context hints to place ads inside relevant conversations. Nearly 49% of ChatGPT messages are ‘asking’ messages, per a 2025 NBER working paper, so the ad environment is often a consultation rather than demand capture. Think of Google as a store clerk at the counter and ChatGPT as a personal shopper walking the aisles with the customer.
The reach and creative gap is still large
Google says it processes more than 5 trillion searches a year. OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week. Those numbers measure different things, and for advertisers the more useful figure is the reachable audience. ChatGPT ads currently appear only on Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business and under-18 users do not see them. Google Search ads, by contrast, show across nearly all markets with few exclusions. Creative flexibility also differs. Google’s responsive search ads allow up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. ChatGPT’s ad unit is more constrained: advertiser name, logo, headline, description, landing page and image. A visual ad format is entering a U.S. test later this month.
Measurement is Google’s moat for now
Google has years of conversion data, Smart Bidding and data-driven attribution. ChatGPT’s Ads Manager beta reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. OpenAI has added a pixel and Conversions API, integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, and attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Northbeam and Singular. The early third-party results are promising but thin.
- WeightWatchers: attributed CPA 15.3% lower than its blended paid-search benchmark.
- Dose: 67% of incremental purchases from net-new customers.
- Portland Leather: 93% of visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new.
One brand per vendor is a signal, not a forecast. Your own ad tracking matters most.
Run a disciplined hybrid test
Do not rip up your Google budget. Keep your best Google Search campaigns as a baseline, then add a small ChatGPT campaign aimed at comparison and discovery topics. Use the same UTM naming rules on both channels, send leads into your CRM, and compare lifecycle stage, cost per qualified lead, sales opportunity and revenue—not clicks alone. HubSpot’s January 2026 survey of 3,000+ CRM purchase decision-makers found AI search was the strongest predictor of purchase intent, with AI search users 36% more likely to purchase. That is why a small ChatGPT test is worth running now. Scale up when your cost per qualified lead is close to Google’s or when ChatGPT brings clearly new customers. Adjust or stop if tracking fails or leads are unqualified.
