Moment of Truth Moves to AI: Winning the Shopper You Never See
Ipsos's KEYS webinar reframes the path to purchase: brands must now win over AI assistants, shelf moments and real home usage at once.
Ipsos has put a name to a shift most brand teams feel but rarely articulate. Its KEYS series is mapping what the firm calls the “New Moments of Truth” — the points in a consumer journey where a choice is won or lost, now reshaped by AI-assisted shopping, connected homes and smarter retail.
The classic framework is familiar. P&G’s moments of truth were the shelf (the first moment) and the home, or first use (the second). Google later added the “zero moment of truth,” where search wins a shopper before they ever enter a store. What Ipsos is adding is a layer many brands still treat as a back-office detail: an AI proxy that may discover, filter and recommend options before a human ever glances at the category.
Four places the new journey turns
The webinar agenda maps four battlegrounds:
- Decisions with AI: how the path to purchase changes when AI narrows the options at crucial decision moments, and where a brand has to show up.
- Innovation for humans and their AI proxies: a shift from mass marketing to hyper-personalised, AI-optimised innovation and packaging.
- Truth at retail: what shoppers really see, do and decide at the shelf — and where AI-powered tools still fall short of understanding.
- Life at home: combining consumer video, multimodal AI and smart sensing to capture authentic consumption moments, unmet needs in context, and what drives repeat buying.
Why the AI proxy changes the brief
If an assistant summarises, ranks and recommends, your packaging, product pages and reviews stop being merely creative assets. They become the briefing an AI reads. The shelf is no longer the only battleground; the summary screen is another, and it may be the first one that matters.
That makes “what does an AI say about us?” a brand question, not an IT question. The same product attributes that win a human’s glance must also be legible to a machine making a recommendation.
What to do about it
Treat AI search and recommendation as a new moment of truth to win. Test how an assistant describes your product against a rival. Then watch real shelf behaviour rather than relying on claimed behaviour, and ground innovation in how the product is actually used at home.
The uncomfortable test is fast: ask an AI to summarise why someone should choose your brand. If you dislike the answer, so will every shopper who never sees your packaging.
