Tata Consumer's new growth bets surge 47%

Tata Consumer Products is learning to stop leaning on tea and salt. For the July-September quarter, consolidated net profit rose to ₹469 crore from ₹404 crore a year earlier, beating expectations as packaged foods and beverages held steady. The more interesting line is where the growth is coming from.

Managing Director and CEO Sunil D’Souza described the business as now having “four strong legs on the TCPL stool” — a clear signal that the company no longer wants to be read as a two-category story.

The growth portfolio is doing the heavy lifting

Growth businesses contributed 38% of India revenue in Q2 FY27, up from 32% a year earlier. The growth portfolio itself expanded 47% in the quarter, and leadership expects it to compound at more than 30% over time.

  • Growth businesses: 38% of India revenue, up from 32% a year earlier.
  • Growth portfolio: expanded 47% in Q2 FY27.
  • Innovation discipline: 22 new products launched in 12 weeks; 5% of sales targeted from innovation.
  • Strategic priorities: core, growth, execution, future-ready organisation, digital and AI, sustainability.

Where the new bets are landing

Tata Sampann grew revenue 57% on volumes. Dry fruits and cold-pressed oils together hit an annualised revenue run rate of about ₹1,000 crore. Ready-to-drink beverages rose 47% in revenue and 34% in volume, helped by premium products and functional launches such as Tata Gluco Plus with added iron and Tata ION. Capital Foods grew 18% and Organic India 9%, with their combined domestic business up 24% despite export shipping disruptions.

Core businesses remain mixed. India Salt grew revenue 15% and volume 9% even with price increases. India tea and coffee volumes were flat, with a marginal revenue dip — a reminder of why diversification matters.

Why this matters for brand builders

This is a portfolio strategy, not just a product-launch story. Tata Consumer is using cash-generating core brands to fund adjacencies in functional foods, nutraceuticals and protein water. It has named six strategic priorities and treats AI as a revenue lever, not merely a cost-cutting tool.

For marketers, the useful frame is not “core versus new” but “core funds the next horizon.” The metric to watch is innovation-to-sales: Capital Foods already runs at 10%, while the group aims for 5%. New products must reach a scale where they visibly move the revenue mix — otherwise innovation is just busyness.

The takeaway

Diversification only matters when the new portfolio gets big enough to change the mix. Tata Consumer is now at 38% and climbing. The challenge is converting launch velocity into sustained demand in protein water, functional foods and nutraceuticals without letting the core stall.
